Croatia seeks to improve corporate governance standards
Zagreb Stock Exchange (ZSE) and Croatian Financial Services Supervisory Agency (HANFA) with the support of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have started a project of reviewing and revising the Croatian Corporate Governance Code.

The aim of the project is to strengthen the implementation of best practice, enhance the monitoring of companies and improve transparency. Through dialogue with companies listed on ZSE and prominent investors on the market, this project will seek to distil best market practices into the revised code and provide a framework capable of contributing to a growing and vibrant capital market. As part of this project supported by the technical assistance from the EBRD Shareholder Special Fund, the training in the corporate governance for ZSE listed companies will be provided at the Zagreb Stock Exchange Academy.

While ZSE and HANFA have drafted a Corporate Governance Code applicable to companies listed on the ZSE in 2007, and revised it in 2010, it needs constant renewal and adaptation in response to market developments and changes in the regulatory environment.
The importance of corporate governance in today's fast changing business environment cannot be denied. Companies that invest in higher standards of corporate conduct and transparency stand to benefit when it comes to access to finance or attracting investors.

The project will be conducted with the help of consultants hired by the EBRD: Nestor Advisors Ltd., a specialist corporate governance consultancy based in London; Žurić & Partners, a corporate law firm with headquarters in Zagreb; and UMiUM Advisory, a consultancy firm from Zagreb.

The project is planned to end in August 2019.
